I was going to post this separately, but since you started a Friday afternoon thread about boats....

Kinja'd!!!

It’s supposed to be properly warm here this weekend. And since I get to decide what we’re doing on Sunday, you better believe it will include the boat.

Yours looks amazingly good for black. You have some hours into buffing and waxing, I’m guessing.

HELL YEAH BOATLOPNIK TIME.

Kinja'd!!!

Pros: No training, registration, dock fees, or insurance required. 10’, holds 4 people/400#, handles surf up to 6’ (or more, depending on beers consumed). Will accommodate a small outboard. Packs into a medium (30L) Rubbermaid bin. Seaworthy in under 10 minutes. $65-$200.

Cons: No skiing. Exposed screws on dock can put holes in it (and did a couple weeks ago; repaired with vinyl patches and PVC cement).

NICE! We have a paddle boat that is a family/guest favorite. Sadly the DNR has gotten really ticky-tacky about life vests WHEN ON THE PADDLE BOAT so it’s a little less fun since you have to stuff a bunch of life jackets somewhere.

Nice! Our dog is a boat lover as well! We often have 3-4 dogs on the pontoon at a time. As for the black, 25-30 hours last year getting it “OK” and another 9-10 this year getting it “pretty damn good” and then ceramic coating it. It’s not perfect but it requires less and less effort every year to keep looking nice so that’s the goal.

This year’s effort: https://oppositelock.kinja.com/ceramic-coating-successful-1826717024

Do yourself a favor, don’t buy red or black (or any color) gelcoat, just buy white and wrap it however you want.

That would make sense but options are limited in the used market.

Yeah, our lakes in AL are pretty lenient about PFDs, but when we go to the Gulf of Mexico the patrol boats have been known to come over and check — even small/unregistered vessels.

Funny thing is that at both lakes and beaches, everyone around me is either on a kayak or SUP, or just a little recreational raft.

This is like the best of everything for those trips. Fast enough to take a family of four a couple miles down the coast to visit other beach towns, tidal lakes, etc. But small enough you can easily drag it over the sand. This year, I’m going to try to do some real fishing from it. Thankfully any punctures leak slowly and the boat has three air chambers.

One day I’ll have a “real boat” like yours, but not until I can justify full-time lake living...

Wow indeed. What you said about black is true in varying degrees about other colors, too. My blue top cap is prone to fading, and I’m always interested in trying something new.

Years ago, a crazy guy in a van showed up at the marina where I was working, and claimed to have a fantastic gelcoat restoration product. He wouldn’t really tell us much, and wanted us to buy a case. He said he could demonstrate but of course didn’t want him anywhere near a customer boat. But we did have a boat out back that I had bought just for parts, so we let him try it out on a little spot. The boat was extremely faded, gray and red. He wiped a little on and rubbed it off a few seconds later, and I’ll be damned if that spot wasn’t absolutely beautiful, and still just as shiny 6 months later when we got rid of the boat. I have no idea what he had in jugs in his van but in hindsight, maybe I should have bought some, lol. Maybe meth is good for restoring gelcoat?
